Cortona, not more than 4 km from Casarirì, about 7 minutes by car, offers several points of interest.
Ancient Etruscan town, stands at an altitude of nearly 500 meters above sea level; it is a touristic town, ancient and modern at the same time. Within a few metres, you can find various shops.
A town rich in churches including St. Margaret, patron saint of Cortona, which is located just outside the walls, in the upper part of the city; was built in 1297, after her death; St. Nicholas and St. Christopher, located between the city center and Santa Margherita, always on the higher part of the town. The first church, small and pretty, is in Romanesque style and it was built in the fourteenth century; the second church, very small, has beautiful frescoes. The Cathedral is located at the center of Cortona. Around the year 1000, the church was built in the Romanesque style that the architect Nicola Pisano restructured in the second half of the thirteenth century. The current structure is from the Renaissance period.
MAEC Museum: Egyptian museum and Etruscan. The object and the most distinctive part is an Etruscan bronze chandelier from the Hellenistic period; in the Egyptian’s side of the museum, of considerable interest is the boat funerary wood.
Diocesan Museum: very close to the Cathedral. Inside you can find works by Bartolomeo della Gatta, Pietro Lorenzetti, Beato Angelico and Luca Signorelli, as well as sacred furniture of the highest quality.
Antiques Fair: the last week of August to the first of September, this fair has been held in Cortona for more than 50 years and it is one of the most renowned in Italy.
Music, culture and photography with Cortona: Mix Festival, an event that takes place between the last days of July and early August, and the Cortona on the Move, a photographic event that begins in mid-July and ends in late September.
The central Cortona offers, bars, restaurants, wine bars, where you can taste all the local specialties, as well as some reinterpretations of traditional recipes by chefs of high quality and professionalism.
